The Opening Ceremony was hosted by Harborough District and took place across two townships with the goal of bringing together the community in celebration. The festivities began in Market Harborough with a bagpipe lead parade to the town square where we were joined by local dignitaries. Speeches were made by BGA Chairman Andrew Perkins, Lord Lieutenant Michael Kapur OBE, Chairman of Harborough District Council Neil Bannister, Competition Director Liz Sparrow and President of the International Jury Rick Sheppe. With the FIA flag raised, the 11th Women’s World Gliding Championships was declared open. The pilots and crew enjoyed touring around the township visiting different shops which displayed flags from all 12 nations competing. The ceremony was continued in neighbouring town, Lutterworth, with a civic reception by the Town Crier. After which the pilots were given a tour of the not yet open Frank Whittle museum to see the first ever jet engine built right there in Lutterworth. The ceremony finished with the laying of a wreath in memory of all those female pilots gone before. Competitors felt truly welcomed by the Harborough District communities and are looking forward to begin the racing tomorrow.
